Fire Mustang
1940-1945Genre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Taito
Year: 1991
System: MD
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
No weapons. Only the standard gun and bomb which both fire automatically by holding A. They can each be upgraded 6 or 7 times until you've got a 3 way spread and a continuous wall of bombs. This looks OP but you still need to weave to clear the screen. Enemies fire a good amount of bullets so it can quickly become bullet hell. Movement feels great and death doesn't remove any powerups so it isn't punishing. Good stuff
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
The stages have no height and no obstacles so there's honestly not much to them. Just take out the enemies as quick as possible to reduce bullets on screen.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
World War 2! And notable battles at that. I appreciate the historical accuracy. Fight on the Battle of Britain, at Midway, in Northern Africa and others. Love it
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
This is probably a stretch but I love the accurate and intricately animated sprites. Backgrounds feature impressive parallax and interesting details, but unfortunately they have a flat core background color. It's like a bunch of interesting decor sitting in front of a drop sheet. But I love the artwork to match the theme and settings.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Terrible songs that sound like they're played by a 5th grader on a recorder. Sound effects are nice and explosive but man that music.
