Gate of Thunder for TG-16 CD
Review #10016
Gate of Thunder
Thunderstruck
Gameplay
Feels great. Three weapons which can be powered up couple of times, as well as two invincible options and a homing missile. Needless to say it doesn't take long before you're overpowered. So much so that I sometimes died because I forgot I needed to avoid the occasional bullet or enemy that escape the cacophany of destruction I was belching out. My only knock against this game is that it's so darn easy.
Level Design
The bosses don't do it for me, but the stages themselves have some amazing moments, including several that back you into a tight corner only to let you out at the last second. Clever stuff. There were a number times when I felt a little bored with long pauses between enemy waves, but overall this is a great, memorable ride.
Theme
An opening cinematic sets up the classic Alien Invasion setting. This game doesn't set itself apart from others who share the trope but it does it very well, with just enough air guitar to prepare you for battle.
Art Style
One of the better looking titles in the genre, with a color palette that looks like a Sherwin Williams store was hit by a freight train. Beautiful explosions fill the screen, and the sprites are quite nice as well. Backgrounds feature a ton of parallax and other effects.
Audio
I know this game is pretty famous for its soundtrack, and I'm not going to argue against that, but the sound effects do drown it out. They're not bad, just pervasive and too-loud. The soundtrack is a rockin' good time, if you like that style.
