Jaguar XJ220 for Sega CD
Review #12053
Jaguar XJ220
The one with a track editor
Gameplay
This is one of the better arcade racers out there. It's a lot like Top Gear but with turns that are a little more finicky. My only gripe is that slowing down doesn't always get you around every turn. Still, the controls are quite good for this genre.
Level Design
Four modes: Grand Prix, World Tour, Practice, and Track Editor (yes, a track editor!)
There are a ton of tracks and each one has a different feel.and fun elements like tunnels and bridges and whatnot. There's a lot of game to explore here. One thing I like is that qualifying places you in position with the other racers. Start in first and it's possible to hold everyone off. I like that it rewards skill but doesn't expect perfection.
Theme
Jaguar is a rich Brit's car so the theme doesn't appeal to me, but the menu music and allowing you to pick a song from a car radio before each race gives it some excellent presentation. It's just a shame that the stuffy artwork makes it laughable. Also, only one drivable car is pretty lame.
Art Style
Mix of good and bad. Fantastic sense of speed and ok sprites but some lame pixel artwork on menus and other screens as well as environmental elements on the sides of the road.
Audio
Groovy music. Excellent sound effects, including one of the most satisfying engine sounds I can remember.
