Space Adventure: Cobra the Legendary Bandit for Sega CD
Review #12118
Space Adventure: Cobra the Legendary Bandit
If I die, will you play Chopin in remembrance of me?
Gameplay
This is a visual novel similar to Snatcher. There's no need to move the cursor. You can simply select from a menu which reacts to whatever is happening in the story. Like Snatcher, revisiting the same menu option can produce different outcomes. Unlike Snatcher, you have almost no free will. Advancing the story requires you to visit everything repeatedly until you've satisfied all requirements to advance the story. There's no inventory, no combat, and no other interactivity.
Level Design
As linear as can be. It's rare to be offered branching options, such as FLEE or FIGHT, but even if you pick the "wrong" response you are guided back to the "right" one. For this reason the game feels more hollow than most.
Theme
This must be based on a manga/anime. You're a Flash Gordon wannabe with a Mega Man cannon arm. Aliens and monsters and sexy girls are everywhere. There's a lot of fan service to earn its M rating.
Art Style
Beautiful anime artwork, but minimal animation and huge letterboxing on the top and bottom of the screen.
Audio
Terrible sound mixing. Voices are barely audible over the loud and hokey music. The voice acting is also laugable bad, with dumb dialogue to boot.
