Spirou for MD PAL
Review #6838
Spirou
Not the purple dragon game
Gameplay
Has that laggy feel of a cinematic platformer (Prince of Persia, et al) but nowhere near as bad as most games in that category. Actually plays pretty well, for as little that it asks you to do. There's no attack, items, or other mechanics. Just run, jump, and climb on ladders and ledges. The ladders and ledges are my main complaint, as it's a crapshoot whether you will actually grab them. I've tried holding up, slowing my momentum toward the target, and trying to find the exact sweet spot, but I still can't figure out a consistent way to grab.
Level Design
Great design. Stages each feel unique. Collectible coins help you find the right path and give incentive to explore without being hard nd fast requirements. There's an autoscroller stage, but most require you to simply get to the end. I never got lost and had a good time finding my way around the map.
Theme
Huge info dumps between stages. It's a platfromer, so I started skipping them. This is one of those games where a super fan would geek out but the rest of us don't konw or care who these characters are.
Art Style
The sprites still look great, but the backgrounds and foregrounds are noticable worse than the SNES version. Still good overall, but a big step down.
Audio
Oy, what happened to the sound design? Music is more lively but uses annoying instumentation. Sound effects are jarring. GEMS must be at fault here.
