Super Air Zonk for TG-16 CD
Review #10037
Super Air Zonk
Bonk...ers
Gameplay
What a disappointment! Movement is slow in this sequel and there's just not much to do. Enemies are rare and often require numerous hits. The familiars from the first game are gone and most of the weapons are tied to a single stage and amount to little more than a peashooter. There are no powerups for your weapons. The only extra firepower at your disposal is a bomb that must be charged up by holding down on the fire button. There's no gauge to show when it's available, which annoying.
The biggest downside is the incredibly low difficulty.
Level Design
Mega Man style stage select followed by a couple of levels with a boss rush. Stages are slow and boring. Most are sparsely populated.
Theme
Far less zany than the first game. Still fun, but far less interesting.
Art Style
Boring, flat backgrounds. Massive step down from the prior game.
Quite a bit of slowdown.
Audio
The music is not to my taste and sound effects aren't great either. The move to CD didn't improve this game.
