Kirby's Dream Course

Part golf. Part puzzle. All Kirby.

Genre: sports - golf

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Fun in small bites. Respects your time by letting you play for 10-15 min rounds and save your game. Deceptively challenging gameplay which requires careful planning and strategic thinking. The key gimmick here are the powerups that let Kirby jump, use an umbrella, turn into a rock, etc. The isometric view matches the game mode well but it makes the game difficult to control. Would be much easier with a top-down view.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Clever course designs. I love the designs.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Super cute and fun. Presentation is excellent as usual for HAL and Nintendo.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Low-key some of the best pixel art in the 16-bit era. What's not to like? Sprite work is incredible and excellent and satisfying effects like sparks and the ice effect.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Catchy music you will be whistling after turning the game off. Great sounds as well with little details like the scale that goes up and then down on the power meter.

Overall Score: 74
