Kishin Douji Zenki: Denei Raibu

Do NOT play the battle/anime sections

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Hudson Soft

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Two distinct modes of gameplay - a standard run and gun platforming mode with a boss at the end of each stage, and then a one-on-one QTE "anime" mode akin to the Megaton Punch minigame from Kirby Super Star. The anime mode is impossible. Stupid. Horrible. Terrible. The worst thing I've seen in video game ever. Naturally, this is how the game begins, and affter 10 minutes of trying everything I could think of I was debating between declaring this game is not-English friendly and could not be reviewed, or giving it a big fat zero and telling oyu to steer far, far clear of it. I have to believe that the original Japanese text explains some trick to how to play and win in this mode, but as is it's quite literally impossible. Instead, use these stage select passwords to skip to and play the platforming levels: Chapter 2 2, 1, 3, 3, 1, 5 Chapter 3 8, 6, 0, 8, 6, 0 Chapter 4 8, 0, 4, 6, 4, 9 Chapter 5 0, 4, 0, 8, 3, 0 Chapter 6 7, 8, 4, 4, 6, 0 The gameplay in these 6 short platforming levels is actually playable. It's a standard Mega Man clone with good platforming, minimal combat, and a powerup shot like MMX. Nothing about it stands out, but it's decent fun.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The levels amount to platforming to collect four scrolls. Doing so gives you extra health in the anime segment which follows after the stage, so you really don't need to both with it. This makes the levels incredibly short - like under one minute short. Each level ends with a boss battle. These are ok, but decidedly uninspired. There is so little content here that I have to dock it a few spots.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Colorful anime characters with exaggerated expressions and a bit of an edge. A mystical, horror-like vibe. Not bad.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Very colorful characters, although the enviornments are a bit drab. Still, this is typical Hudson pixel artwork. Good stuff.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Nice music, with Japanese instruments and good composition. The pace of the music fits the settings and ebbs and flows for boss battles and regular levels.

Overall Score: 59
