Earth Light for SFC

Earth Light

Military Happiness

Genre: strategy - turn-based tacticsy

Publisher: Hudson Soft

Year: 1992

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Carbon copy.of Military Madness, but with a lighter tone, reduced difficulty, and a pastel color scheme. Seriously though, this is the rare clone that outshines the original. A recent translation hack makes this gem playable. My only complaints are that you have to memorize which attack to use against which enemies units, and that you can't cancel our of any menu. Once you pick an attack type you're committed, since backing out cause that unit to lose their turn. As with all turn-based strategy games, this has the all-important ability to see enemy unit movement range.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Stages are well designed and a pre-mission briefing shows you possibly routed and all objectives. Fantastic stuff. Maps are small but dense.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Near future Earth colony sci-fi setting. Again, each mission has clear objectives and both a pre-mission briefing and a post-missipn recap complete with a chart - another must in my book.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Cute sprites that aren't quite Chibi but are far from realistic. Some decent mech designs to be honest. I didn't get tired of the animations, although I would've appreciated the option to turn them off.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Awesome music. Hudson knew what they were doing back then.

Overall Score: 85
